Mom of the Month

Every month we take a moment to honor one of our local FIT4MOM Moms for her efforts to lead and role model a healthy lifestyle while also getting to know her better at the same time. This month we honor Kimberly Green Guigley, aka Brynn and Emerson's mom.

Kim is a big inspiration to so many moms and has been a dedicated participant in our classes for almost 6 years. Today is an extra special day as Kim is getting certified to teach Fit4Baby/Stroller Strides. We are thrilled that Kim will be joining the FIT4MOM Marin team!! We asked Kim a few questions so that we all can get to know her better:

Where is your hometown?

Pittsburgh, PA! I love it, and my entire family is still there, so sometimes it can be really tough being this far away.

Education?

University of Pittsburgh, BA in Environmental Studies and Business

How long have you been a Stroller Strides Member and what has Stroller Strides done for you?

I have been a member of Stroller Strides for 5.5 years, since August 2009. I started with Fit4Baby when I was pregnant with Brynn, after just moving to Warrenton, VA from Boston, MA. I was trying to stay fit, make friends and deal with my first pregnancy in my new state where I knew no one. I met the owner/instructor of Fit4Baby/Stroller Strides at the gym I had just joined and started taking class with her immediately. When Brynn was six weeks old we started Strides. I still remember our first day at Strides. I was a nervous and emotional wreck! I was afraid to run (thinking I would tip the stroller). Then after class I raced home to nurse her there because I was so uncomfortable nursing without my zillion pillows, the boppy and the foot stool... such a new mom!

Stroller Strides has done so many things for me... It kept me healthy and fit throughout two pregnancies and enabled me to get my body back. It created a fantastic morning routine for me when I was a brand new mom and suffering with a colicky baby and PPD. It created a wonderful support network of incredible like-minded women both in Warrenton and here in Marin. I have made wonderful, life-long friends, and so have my kids. The network, resources, support, laughter, memories, sisterhood, sanity and healthy living Strides has given me is invaluable. I cannot say enough about what Strides has done for my life. I think every new mom should do it.

Who are the members of your family?

Rob, my hubs whom I met at college in 1998. My awesome girl, Brynn, who is five on February 5. And my fantastically-wild boy, Emerson (Emmo), who is three on January 30.

What is/was your previous career?

I last oversaw all on-campus events at Harvard Business School. Was there for six years. Before that I managed events at an events agency in New York City for three years.

What was your childhood ambition?

My childhood ambition was to be a primatologist, I was fascinated by gorillas. But in college, my plan was to be a physical therapist... but then, as a biology major, I started taking Organic Chemistry and very quickly changed my mind.

What does motherhood mean to you?

Unconditional love. Every night I say to the kids "I love you forever, no matter what". And lately I've been quoting a book to them "I love you forever. I like you for always. As long as I'm living, my baby you'll be". That book is a serious a tear jerker, can't get through two pages without completely losing it.

What is the furthest you have been from home?

Greece (furthest from here) and Hawaii (furthest from the east coast).

What is your favorite exercise?

When we run the bases in class at Memorial Park in San Anselmo. It just makes me feel like a kid and is so super fun! Burpees too, which I love and hate because they are so effective but so hard!

What is your proudest moment?

A drug-free labor and birth with Emmo (and nearly drug free with Brynn). After that I feel I am a warrior who can handle anything.

What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)?

Stroller Strides (seriously). Good food and wine with friends. The beach.

Any advice for other moms out there?

I don't always heed this advice but take care of YOU! It's so easy to lose yourself when you are raising babies. I have been taking care of me for the past 5.5 years by working out with Fit4MOM five days a week. I never let a fussy baby (or an ornery toddler) stop me. It is my one hour of the day that is for me and my motto is the kids can, and will, deal with it. They get the entire 23 other hours! It has become part of their routine as much as it is mine. And they love seeing their buddies at Strides then playing at the playground afterward. Keep it going with FITt4MOM, even when the going gets tough! It's so worth it. YOU are worth it!

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique

I have been to 18 Dave Matthews Band concerts, starting in 1994. I had a pierced eyebrow in college. I can eat one of my mom's homemade lemon meringue pies - a whole pie - in one sitting. I have lived in PA, NY, MA, VA, CA and Dublin, Ireland since college, and love Marin the absolute most! I am now a "best" coast lifer

If we asked your spouse what he thinks your best qualities are, what would they say?

I would guess he'd say that I am a control freak, an obsessive planner and a bit of a bleeding heart. But I asked him and he said I am sensitive, committed and caring. That sounds so much nicer than what I was thinking, ha ha!
